FWT Chamonix

First day we arrived in Chamonix all lift stations were closed because of too much snow the day before... PERFECT ;)

The next day Mitch Tölderer, Xavier De Le Rue, Mathieu Crepel and me did some sick runs at "Le Brevent" before line check in the afternoon for next days competition. Well, contest was not perfect - super flat light, meaning bad visibility and I could not ride my line as planed. Upper part was good, some solide riding and clean drops but for the last feature in my run I had a bad feeling and decided not to do this double drop... ended up 6th place. No worries, I knew I can do better...

Same day in the evening we all moved to the other "sunny" side of Mont Blanc for the Courmayeur Event.

The 1st FWT event this season was held in Revelstoke, Canada. When we arrived it was snowing and we went straight up on the mountain the next morning. Riding was good even if slopes and backcountry get tracked fast. We had some days riding before contest and took the chance to check out all the tree runs you can reach.

Contest face called "Mack face" is just next to the resort. We got a heli flight up there which gave us the chance to see more mountains i.e. lines around Revelstoke. Lots of terrain here!!

I was stoked about my line... first drop, some turns, next drop, don`t miss the entry to the very steep and narrow part of my line, one last drop and pointing the finish gate! yeaHH!! Level of competitors was high, Ralph Backstrom(USA) took the win. Congrats dude! I ended up 5th place.

me going fast finish area Sure I noticed that it`s snowing like hell back home in Austria and 2 days later I discovered already new lines in the tyrolean mountains, which were not possible to ride the last years because of snow conditions. Riding is on!!

"Festival Alpinismu" - Prag

The last weekend Björn Heregger and me spent in Prag where the "Festival alpinismu" took place. We came there to show our Film "Soultrip Argentina" and answer some questions and stuff... It was a nice festival, Prag nightlife was good as well!

Big thanks to the organization, for sure we would like to come back next year! Hopefully again with a good movie...

Mayrhofen - the perfect start for our 4 valley road bike tour:

Together with Häusl Stefan and Christina(who came with us the first 2000 vertical meters) we did all 4 valleys which start from Mayrhofen in one single day .

1. Schlegeis dam
2. Hintertux glacier
3. Zillergrund dam
4. Stillup dam

3756 vertical, 142km, 7h 20min... Hochfeiler north face in the back - good memories on my descent in 2005

This was an exhausting and very nice day, followed by a good Wiener Schnitzel and some beer...
Just 2 days later, me and Christina did like a small Zillertal crossing. This time with our mountain bikes and about 1500m higher. We started our tour from Schwaz up to Loassattel and down to the ski area Hochfügen. Then up again to Rastkogel hut from where super nice trails brought us down to Mayrhofen. The next day we biked up and down from Penken to Hintertux, up to Tuxerferner hut and again a fantastic trail to Schmirn and finally to Matrei. from Hochfügen to Mayrhofen

It`s all about biking, swimming, doing some exams for university and of course time for BBQ, surf trips and other funny stuff...

At the moment I bike a lot, road bike and downhill. Yesterday I went for a nice lap next to Kitzbühl and met the "Leopard Trek" cycling team. The guys who are not doing the Tour de france have a training camp around Kitzbühl. All of them were really friendly and I was allowed to follow them in their slipstream. Average speed 44km/h for 1,5 houres. More or less flat terrain and little bit up and down. Sure I was never that fast with my road bike...

I ended up 5. place in the Freeride World Tour OVERALL ranking. Top ranking was a 2. place at FWT Fieberbrunn, 4. FWT Verbier, 4. FWT Engadin... Was a great season with lot of fun and awesome riding - specially in Russia. Looking already foreward to next year!!

How different things can look like... compare your self!

The big final of the Freeride World Tour has always been in Verbier, the mountain is called Bec des Rosses. Sometimes there is snow, sometimes not. The LINES are there all the time!!

Here my line at Verbier Xtreme 2011, unfortunately not 100% clean because I hit a rock or something in the lower part just while riding, but was fun anyway. Conditions were tricky this year, 20cm fresh snow and lot of rocks just covered a bit. We call it "sharks" ...they just wait to bit you!

Xavier de Le Rue took the same entry, think I managed this part little better ;) Again - compare your self...

FWT Verbier Xtreme

4th place at the Verbier Xtreme - another time close to the podium at the Xtreme like in 2009!! I had a really good run all the way down, specially the upper part was great. I did a exposed drop into a steep and narrow snow field, followed by some clean stomped cliffs. Unfortunately in the lower part of my run I hit a rock or something just while riding and had a fall - No perfect run...

Nevertheless I`m super happy about the feedback I got from riders and judges. Xavier de Le Rue was thinking about a similar line at the top and watched me droping in, as he had a later BIB number. After he told me he was really impressed how fast and easy I managed this part. Yeahh!!

In the Freeride World Tour OVERALL ranking I ended up in 5th place! STOKED!!

The Worldchampion title 2011 goes to my friend Mitch Tölderer - congrats!! Mitch showed impressive riding the hole season, 2nd overall Flo Orley, 3rd Xavier de Le Rue. Mitch, Flo and I ride a lot together as we all live in the wonderfull city called Innsbruck, best place on earth ;) Seems like...

Verbier was great like always and the "Freeride World Tour end of season party" was lot of fun - see you all next year again!! Ohhhh yeaH !!

BIG Final of the Freeride World Tour 2011 in Verbier, Switzerland. Once again I`m here and it still feels like a dream!! Only the top riders are qualified for this last event, being one of them is crazy! The hole village is ready, lots of side events are organized...

Yesterday we had face inspection and BIB draw. I`m starting with BIB 20, meaning 6th men as girls are starting first from the shoulder little further down. Right now it`s snowing, deep powder run down the Bec des Rosses guaranteed!!

FWT Fieberbrunn - 2nd place!!

For the first time a Freeride World Tour event took place in Austria, Fieberbrunn. Organization was perfect and lot of spectators came to watch the competition. Motivated from friends and family who came here, I could ride my line pretty much as planed and got 2nd place - Yeahhhhhhh !!!! Sharing the podium with my friend Mitch Tölderer with a similar choice of line, Stefan Häusl(1.) and Matthias "Hauni" Haunholder(3.) in Ski category made it a perfect "Austrian Freeride day" Congrats to all!!

Specially here in Austria the media presence was insane. Sometimes it was actually not that easy to get everything done, as the main focus should stay on my run but everybody ask you for an interview etc. Nevertheless I really enjoyed that people seemed to be stoked from the show up on the mountain!

Now I am looking foreward to the big final in Verbier which is definitely the highlight in Freeride competitions! The legendary Bec des Rosses is a steep mountain with lots of rocks and so called "no fall zones" - no mistake allowed!

Sitting in the hotel and watching the snow flakes falling down... that is what we are doing today, as ski resort is closed because of too much snow! No joke, started this night and same forecast for the next days. Wish I could bring some snow back home, but exess package is just to expensive ;)

Contest is done, got 6th place overall here in Russia. We have had two contest runs on different faces, an easy first day and an interesting venue for the second day. I ended up 7th place the first day and 3rd place yesterday. I`m happy about my run yesterday, first day was ok but it took me long to pick a line and finally I came to the start just 5 minutes before I had to drop in. Not perfect, but my fault...

The best run anyway was right after contest. Samuel Anthamatten, by the way winner in ski category - congrats!!! and me did an insane russian spine line. Terrain here offers crazy stuff, from magic treeruns to steep lines like in Alaska... it was super nice days here in Krasnaya Polyana!!! I`ll definitely come back!

FWT Russia

Just arrived in Krasnaya Polyana, Russia for the next Freeride World Tour event. Today we could ride some really nice treeruns with 30cm fresh powder - I like :)

Due to safety reason we can`t go for the contest face which was planed, so idea is to have a first run on easy terrain tomorrow and a second contest day on Sunday. Both runs will count together.

I`m not very happy with the venue for tomorrow, but I`ll do my best to find a nice line...

After some weeks of spring conditions it seems like winter decided to strike back!! Fresh snow and blue bird - PowPow session deluxe!!

Alex, Burger, Mitch and me had a super nice week riding powder all day long... Steep couloirs, high speed lines, cliff drops and finally cold beer. What else do we need?

Wednesday I gonna go to Rusia, Sochi where the next stop of the Freeride World Tour takes place. They just opened a new resort, which is pretty sick by the way - so we definitly will have lot of fun shredding the Caucasus mountains beside having the contest, planed for Saturday this week.

BUT keep in mind: In case of an accident it`s all about time!! Make sure you know how to use saftey stuff and how to organize the rest of the group...

FWQ 4* Hochfügen

Another time close to the podium... Beside the Freeride World Tour events, I decided to compete also in the 4*FWQ Hochfügen. The contest face is pretty sick, snow contitions were good, specially considering there is not as much snow in Europe as we would like to have...!!

The line I choose was a pretty tecnical and steep one. When I came to the narrow entry I was really suprised of what I saw, there were already so many rocks uncovered by a rider before me, so I could not ride the first part of my line as clean and fast as I wanted. Nevertheless the lower part was good and fast, ended up 4th place. Was a funny weekend!

Congrats to Emilien Badoux/ SUI and the other riders on the podium! Good level of riding, I`m sure we will see some of the riders soon in the FWT!!

Organization was perfect, thanks for the original "Tiroler Abend" the day before contest! I´m sure all the riders who have been up there enjoyed this nice dinner including traditional tyrolian music, schnaps etc.

FWT Engadin - St.Moritz

Got 4th place in the 2nd stop of the Freeride World Tour, which took place at the Corvatsch north face close to St. Moritz, Switzerland. It`s hard to tell how much this means to me, as after my injury last spring I still have to be very carefull and take it pretty easy. I`m not able to go for big drops, but nevertheless I scoped a line with some nice smaller size drops and a steep technical part in the middle. I could ride the line super clean, fast and it was just a good feeling riding down the face because snow conditions this time were really good! Super happy!!

Finally just 0,2 points made the difference to podium. Beside the main judging there was also a VIP Judging consisting of Björn Dunkerbeck, Ueli Kestenholz, Tanja Frieden and Freddy Nock who judged me 2nd place. Yeahh!!

The day after competition "The Austrians" went up the the Julier pass for a nice hike. The RedBull/ Servus TV joined us and we got some good footage for their 9x 26min TV show, starting soon!! The focus of corse in on the Tour and the Austrians, who are competing. Beside it shows, how we prepare for the contest, how to choose the line, how much fun we have... and whatever else we do - Harry and Stefan are always around to document what is happening.

Yesterday I went to Salzburg to the RedBull/ Servus TV studio. Pristach Matthias(organizer of the 4* FWQ Hochfügen) and me were invited to a studio talk. It was really fun and interesting there, we looked really way better with makeup :)

FWT Engadin - St.Moritz

The last couple of days I spent riding at my local resort. We got 50cm of fresh snow and I just came back home in time from Chamonix to get some first lines!! Today we did a nice hike and earned more fresh powpow deluxe!! Jepeeeeeeeee!!

Right now I`m in St. Moritz for the 2nd FWT event. The Corvatsch north face is ready for us riders and just waiting to get tracked... Got BIB 16 - Super happy about that, meaning no stress, but still one of the first, as it is always one skier - one snowboarder going down. Ready to DROP IN...

Congrats to Xav, Aurelien and Douds!

Contest is over, got 8th place. I could not ride my line as fast as I use to ride, but anyway I`m happy about the competition. Due to my injury I had in April last year(compression fracture 10/12 vertebral body) I still have to be very careful. That`s why I had to choose a line without big drops, but still a nice line including 3 smaller cliffs. Of course it`s difficult to compete against the world best freeriders and not feeling a 100% fit. No matter, I`m super happy to have the chance to take part in the FWT events and I feel better every day, but it`s a lot of work to stay in shape with this handicap... Was lot of fun in Chamonix!

The heli flight up to the contest face next to Courmayeurs ski resort was just awesome!! Mont Blanc to the right, contest face to the left... The pilot droped us next to the start gate and disappeared behind the mountain to pick up the next riders.

2 days after competition - first we had to party in Chamonix, followed by a resting day - Stefan Häusl and me hiked one of the STEEP COULOIRS in the Argentiere basin, called "Les Courtes" 3856m, 48°

It was a very cold day (-20°C) and conditons were not easy at all (hard/compact snow), but I`m stoked that I could realize to climb and ride one more of the thousands couloirs which are next to Chamonix!! Yeahhhh!!

Competition is ON tomorrow in Courmayeur because conditions here in Chamonix are not too good. No problem for us riders, meaning we are going for a new face for everybody! I checked out a nice line, I feel really good with my choice, hopefully I can ride it as good as planed. Snow conditions in the face are not that easy. I expect hard and compact snow in some parts, but all in all should be ok! Stoked to start first of the snowboarders, FWT 2011 starts NOW!!

Friday we had some nice runs with good snow up on the glacier. Lot of fun shredding with Nino and Mitch. Perfect "test runs" for the Freeride World Tour and its first stop in Chamonix next week. I feel pretty good!! Check out the teaser!

Sunday weather cleared up in the morning and even if the snow conditions in Hochfügen were not the best, it was a perfect organized competition with good runs from the riders. I helped out as one of the judges and it was really interesting to see how the riders managed the terrain. Respect and gratulation to all, riders and organization crew!

Having a nice day is pretty much easy: fresh snow, cold temperatures and some of your friends up in the mountains! After partying the day before @ weekender club (cappuccino club party - a really good charity project) we went to bed little ealier in order to be ready the next morning.

Have a look on the shape of the snow on this picture and you will understand. Everything lookes like that the last 100m... and sounds like "klirrrrrr" when you touch it. Totally different to what we have in the Alps.

Relaxed from the HOT springs, 40+°C we went back to the Argentinean-Chilean boarder. The goal was a two day hike up to Volcano Lanin. From the Volcano we did some days before in Chile we could already see this beautiful mountain, which is way higher than all other peaks around. Weatherforecast looked good this time even if it is always difficult to say in Patagonia... weather changes fast and if wind is coming up, it`s more like storm! ...and so it was on the way up to the refuge. Nevertheless we made it up there with all our stuff - and a bottle Vino tinto ;) - and the next day was just perfect.

Vulcano Villarrica, 2nd try...

Back to Pucòn/ Chile to hike up to the top of the Volcano Villarrica. One week ago we had bad weather conditions but this time everything went perfect... What a magic feeling to look into an active vulcano and smell the sulfur coming out of that huge hole!! Yeahhhhhhhhhh!!!!

In San Martin de Los Andes we met up with our friend and local Tato Vasiuk. After some cold beer at "Tatos" bar, the next day we went up to Chapelco, where we did some hikes in the backcountry. Together we spend a few days up there and got nice runs. Totally siiiiiiick!!

The first few days of our Salewa Soultrip we spent in Pucòn - Chile, a super nice village situated next to the active vulcano Villarrica. Twice we tried to hike up to the summit, but weather did not allow us to make it to the very top...

Nevertheless the unique landscape here is impressive and we really enjoy our trip. Living in Andrè Sommers bus called "Bondi" makes us flexible to go were the best conditions are and gives us the possibility to stay up on the to the mountains and enjoy epic sunrises and beautiful sunsets... Life is good!!

When we arrived in Santiago de Chile, we spend one day sightseeing with our friend Nico Demetrio who showed us around and had tasty chilean lunch(Pisco Sour, vino y mucho bife de lomo... mmmhhhhh). Later we took our flight to Temuco, where we met Andrè. Right now we had some good days in San Martin - Argentina. More including some pictures soon...

Just in the middle of summer time when others hang out at lakes and stuff, Alex Hoffmann and me decided to start already Winter season 2010/11. We found awesome conditions up there and few people... this day was totally sick!!

Zillertal - Bruneck - Cortina - Lago di Caldonazzo
9778 vertical metres, 362 km, 6 days, 82,4 km/h max. speed...

Each day was special and the Dolomites are just beautyful, also in summer time... We rode insane trails down the mountains, all kind of styles from technical to easy and full speed downhill.

When we started our tour from Zillertal the weather was pretty bad, 20 cm fresh snow on the top and cold feet... No matter, full of motivation we were really stoked about the first trail bringing us down to St. Peter. The following days we had lot of fun biking up and down and recovered with good italian food and cold beer in the evening!

Sorry for no posts the last view weeks! What happened...

Since a long time I wanted to ride some of the famous Alaskan Powder lines. Finally I made it to Valdez together with the Flow Crew and we spend 2 weeks up there. It was some good days riding, but unfortunatly I got injured - compression fracture of my 10/12. vertebral body. No need to say how I felt... Not good at all. Right now I feel better all day and I will continue doing everything to recover soon and as good as possible!! At least I had some runs in AK and could check out how everything works up there to be prepared for 2011. I`ll be back :) !!

Of course winter is over for me, means no more steeps which I wanted to ride. Summer is coming fast, but I'm already looking foreward to ride again - the next snowboard trip, mid of september, is already planed! I'll tell you more about that soon...

For me it didn`t go that good. With a strong and fast run in the upper part, where I had to deal with lot of sluff, I went this time for the so called "Hollywood" cliff. I droped the cliff to the side with a nice grap but probably I hid a rock seconds after the landing and made a frontflip straight after. F.......k! Back on track I finished my line but a good result was not possible anymore. Right after in the finish I was disappointed because I knew it was a good run but with that mistake no chance for the podium, 8th place. Next time!!

On Saturday we tried to have the Final of the Freeride World Tour on the Bec the Rosse in Verbier, Switzerland. Due to bad weather coming in after some riders, competition was canceled. So we all enjoy the street flair here in Verbier with live music, good food and lot of people coming to watch.

Chamonix steeps

The last few days I spend in Chamonix with my friends Scherer Reini and Andi Geisler to ride some steeps. We started to ride the Rond Glacier face, next to Cosmiques hut - a 45-50°/ 800m descent. Conditions were good, the snow was pretty hard and some parts icy and rocky. No problem for us, even more challenge...

The next day we went for the 50-55°/ 700m Jäger Couloir down from Mont Blanc du Tacul(4248m). In the morning we took the gondola up to the Aiguille du Midi, rode down to the beginnig of the Couloir and hiked up to the end. To change from crampons to the board in this steep is really not easy, but with my FLOW Bindings I felt safe because I`m able to strap in facing the slope. I started first, the snow was firm and good to ride. Reini and Andi followed down the couloir and we all were super stoked about that day!!!!!!!!

After riding good powder the last few days we were looking for more!!
So we took our snowshoes and hiked some nice peaks next to Innsbruck... What a magic day!

Tomorrow I`m going to Switzerland, first to Nendaz, followed by Chamonix and finally to Verbier. Riding feels good, I`m ready for the Bec de Rosses and the big final of the Freeride World Tour!

Today me, Häusl Stefan and Geli hiked two times a nice face next to St. Christoph. After heavy snowfalls we found perfect conditions and no tracks up there. Our lines were filmed by Carsten Darr, Arlberg TV, and after we did some interviews in the studio. We talked about safety stuff and how to choose a line. Funny day and deep powder runs!!

Go big or go home! Competition didn`t went good this time, finishing 9th place. I tried to go for a nice line and went for some steep stuff with a narrow exit, but unfortunatly I could not make it fluid. Not really happy about that, but can`t change it anyway... it is difficult to ride totally clean all the time! Congrats to the others, good show at Silverado face - Squaw Valley ski resort.
This face was choosen after we tried to have the third stop of the Freeride World Tour on the mystical Tram Face right below the gondola, but conditions did not allow to have a save contest there.

BIG Line, BIG Crash... Watch out the super steep entry of my run, some deep powder turns and unfortunately a big fall instead of a nice double drop to exit the "X-Box", as we called this rocky feature in the contest face. Even with BIB 28, last snowboarder, I could find a line nobody did before ;)

Big Mountain riding is dangerous, the level of riding in the FWT is very high and of course we push each other to improve our riding. BUT I felt confident about my line and was unlucky because of the bad snow conditions after my landing and made a 12m "backflip", trying not to hit the rocks... That`s why I do lot of workout and stuff all over the year, to not get injured in case of such a tumble. And finally, two days later, I made it on the podium!

Good snow conditions, blue sky and a winning line ;) - what a perfect day!!

I went for a spectacular line on the lookers right part of the Wildseeloder north face. First I had to tarvers above a no fall zone to my first drop into a steep landing, followed by riding a spine that ended with a double drop. At the lower part I jumped some smaller stuff and finished with a straight line...

I`m stoked that I could ride my line like planed, sticked all my drops really clean and had a fast run. To win this competition, specially in Austria next to my home, is just awesome and we all enjoyed the party till late night...

So far, after 4 ouf of 6 Freeride contests, which I want to take part this winter, I'm super satisfied and I have still the chance, to battle for the Freeride World Champion title 2010!!

Looking foreward having a good time riding some peaks in Austria the next two weeks, before I go to Squaw/ USA.

Changing snow conditions and lot of rocks on the steep Corvatsch north face made it difficult to ride. No matter for us Freeriders, as we all tried to show an interesting run. I went for the lookers right part of the face, which is steep and has lot of lines. About half way down it was more rocks than expected, so I had to change a little bit, but managed well. Then, with fast turns and lot of sluff, I went for the last feature in my line but at the very end I had a stupid fall because of firm snow I guess... Whatever, it was a nice trip to switzerland, perfect organisation and a big party!!

Back from Munich - ISPO, get my stuff together and leave to St. Moritz tomorrow for the FWQ. The contest takes place at the Corvatsch north face, about 600m vertical drop and lot of lines. Conditions should be good, so I'm looking forward to a siiiiick powder run...!!

After my big crash in the first event, I was searching for a smooth line to ride fast and fluid, clean and of course with lot of style ;) Finally it worked out like planed!
I'm really happy that I could make it on the podium again and I know, my run was pretty close to Xavie de Le Rue's. The conditions were very good and the venue allowed very different lines to ride, so the spectators could watch many impressive runs, from snowboarders and skiers.

Blue sky and 50cm of fresh snow... Yesterday we finally had the first Freerideworldtour event in 2010 in Chamonix. Beside good powder in the face, there were some tricky parts with ice and rocks. I choose a different line as the other snowboarders, who all started from starting gate Nr.2. My run was pretty good and fast in the upper part of the face. For the lower part I decided to go for an interesting, but also exposed double. Unfortunatly I didn't get enough grip on my edge after the first smaller drop because of hard snow, more like ice, and had a big fall. Luckily I didn't hurt myself, but ended up 14th. Try to make it better next time ;)

Today we have a photoshoot for "Men's Health" magazine and on wednesday we all go to Courmayeur, Italy for the next competition instead of Russia. Not too bad, specially because we expect good conditions there!!

The last two days I was at home in Innsbruck and now I'm going to Chamonix for the second stopp of the Freerideworldtour. Jippppeeeee!!

Beside doing some training to stay in shape, I took the chance to hike with my buddy Joggl Zangerl @ my home mountains and we found some good runs. Even if the winter this year could be better, there is always something to ride!!

FWT Russia postponed to Chamonix

After about a week here in Krasnaya Polyana, Russia the first stopp of the Freeridewordtour is postponed to Chamonix the next weekend. Because of bad weather, meaning no sunny day it was not possible to have a fair and safe competition. No problem for us riders, we went riding most days and had some nice runs and a good party in Sochi. Tonight I`m flying back home, stay there for a couple of days before I leave to Chamonix.

Finally I got all my boards and the other stuff I missed and we went riding the last days. Snow conditions are not very good, but it`s still not too bad to ride. Wet snow, almost like surfing... No matter, Russia is an adventure by itself and we have lot of fun here!! Contest is probably on saturday, the next days it`s suppost to snow and the the weather should clear up.

Arrived in Krasnaya Polyana, Russia for the first stop of the Freerideworldtour 2010. Unfortunately I’m here without my FLOW Infinite and the protection stuff... boardbag is still in Vienna. Hopefully I get it all with the next flight on Tuesday morning, but to make sure to get my board I asked Mitch Tölderer to bring another one. Thänx Mitch!!

So today I do some workout, relax at the pool in our hotel and tomorrow I go riding with some stuff from other riders. Snow conditions and weather could be better, but there is some good powder on the top of the mountains, as the others told me ;(

Most important I feel good, Russia is a great experience and best of all, I’m here for more than another week!!

Me and some friends, who usually ride together, trained the worst case. We all tried to learn from each other and finally it was a funny day!
LVS, shovel and probe is very important and we never ride without. BUT most important is HOW TO USE it... PRACTICE SAFES TIME and maybe the life of your buddy!!
